On the evening of December 16, Charlotte Morrison Combs gracefully passed into Eternal Life surrounded by family. Charlotte was born on July 16, 1928 in Woodstock, VA to Harold and Lois Morrison who preceded her. She is survived by her brother Harold 'Buddy' Morrison and wife Kitty. Charlotte married Ralph H. Combs on April 26, 1948 and they shared 65 years together. They experienced wonderful adventures together with their four children and their spouses, Sandra and Peter Comar of Woodstock, Julie and David Coffman of Charlottesville, Ralph, Jr. and Maripeg Combs of Winchester and Bryan and Patty Combs of Mt. Jackson. "Grandmama" will be missed by her 8 grandchildren, Ryan and Mark Coffman; Will and Sam Combs, Lynn Miskovic; Emily, Michael and Lindsay Combs; and one great grandchild Taliesen Combs. Charlotte was a 1945 graduate of Woodstock High School and a graduate of the Palmer Business School and served as Treasurer of Woodstock Garage. Family was always very important to Charlotte as she was a storybook mother and homemaker who devoted her life to her husband and children. The family spent many hours enjoying car rides seeing the countryside and learning about the Old Dominion's rich history and important sites where our Nation began. She never missed her children's plays, musicals, school activities and could always be found in the stands cheering on her children and the rest of the Central Falcons. She not only gave her time to her family, but was a loyal and faithful lifelong member of Emanuel Lutheran Church where she served as a teacher for both Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, Co-Chair of the Nursery Committee and any other capacity in which she was asked. Every year at the beginning of school she could be found at the Woodstock Elementary School doing eye screening tests for the Lions Club. Charlotte enjoyed traveling, knitting and was a talented seamstress who crafted many of her family's clothes including doll clothes and cherished wedding dresses for her daughters. She and Ralph explored America and other parts of the world together. She was a delightful Southern Lady always greeting people with a smile and a warm welcome.A Memorial Service will be held Monday December 23 at 11 a.m. in the Sanctuary of Emanuel Lutheran Church on High St. in Woodstock with the Rev. Nathaniel Robinson officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 10 a.m. prior to the service in the Church Fellowship Hall. 5/23/12 - Our classmate, Donna Peters Johnson sent me this email informing us about her fiance and I wanted to share with you all.  Please say a prayer for Gary:

Dawn,
I wanted to ask for prayer for my fiance' Gary F. Miller. He had two strokes yesterday. I found him at his shop after he had his second stroke. God placed me there at jsut the right time! Yes, I am looking at the good in this horrible situation because I know God is in charge. I may get exhausted, I may be weepy, but I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that God has my back. We were to be married in three short weeks. But because of this incident we founf several major health issues that need attention. He has a heart problem which in essence caused the two strokes. In addition to that he has high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Had this not happened things would have surely gotten worse. So I give my love and thanks to my Father who, no matter what, always has my back.

I thought we were close before but I believe this will bind our hearts closer and cause us to share the love of God more often than we used to. Our lives have changes for a short season but I do think with all my heart that Gary will not only make a full recovery but he will come out stronger physically, emotionally, and most imposrtantly, spiritually. The things we often God through aren't for us rather they are a teaching opportunity to those around me. God is good so pray without ceasing and know that whatever you may be going through there is someone out there that needs to hear you encouraging words. Who wants to bless those who choose to bring honor to his name!

Be blessed and thank you in advance for your love and prayers :)

5/21/12 - I was just informed that Mrs. Bonnie Gochenour, one of our beloved high school teachers was recently diagnosed with Leukemia.  Please keep her and the family in your prayers.

Dawn, Please be in prayer for my step-dad Charles Bly. He went to the hospital to have a catherization which was unsuccessful. They kept him at Winchester Medical center where he will be having a triple or quadruple bypass in the morning. I believe in God's healing powers andI know he is already covered however, I also believe in the wonderful power of prayer!

02/19/12 - Donna Peters Johnson' Father, Richard Peters passed away at 6:00 PM peacefully at his Florida home.  He was 80 yearas old.  Please keep Donna and her family in your prayers. I will add the obituary once it is available.

5/27/11 - This email came to me this morning from Donna.  Please say a prayer for her and her doctors:
Dawn,
I have been on medical leave from my job at school since March3. I had been having a lot of difficulty with many different health issues. I had been having trouble with acid reflux for several years. Dr. Germroth sent me to a throat specialist in 2008.
Dr. said that my vocal cords were swollen but she thought everything was okay other than that. Time had passed and I was still hoarse and my throat became extremely raw, in addition to this I was having breathing trouble. My R. A. and Fibromyalgia had also been bothering me and it was affecting everything including my job.
Dr Germroth sent me to have a test done on my heart and found out that two main ventricles on the right side of my heart. At that same time he said I am sending you back to Winchester to get your throat checked again.
I had a sleep study done that found that I have sleep apnea but I need to have that repeated again because the tech forgot to do one thing he should have. That is next Tuesday.
My vocal cords are now permanently damaged due to the bad acid reflux. I am having a special surgery done on June 3 to recreate a new esophogus.
After this I may have to have a type of heart catherization to measure my heart pressure. I am taking 100mg. of Lasix a day and my ankles and feet are swelling alot.
I got a new R.A. doctor and she has changed 3 of my meds. I feel more confident with this doctor and I have great thoughts about it. I trust God's healing power and I wasn't created to live in so much pain!
My youngest daughter has also been sick. I have been taking her ack and forth to UVA. In a couple of weeks they are going to do a laproscopic procedure to check for Endometriosis. It runs in my family. Both my Mom and I had to have hysterectomies very early.
I pray that she finds the answers she needs and get the appropriate assistance.
You can shorten this up easily but I wanted to explain it all to you!
Thank You and God Bless, Donna

6/26/10  -   I have several prayer concerns, they seem to come in abundance these days.  L.B. (Larry Butts) a musician friend of mine that I have known for less than a year, has been diagnosed with Mestasis Carcinoma.  The lump in his neck started only about a month or so ago.

I also wish to keep everyone on the page in prayer as well, most particularly Kim.

Though I don't recollect her name, there is a young lady in Winchester diagnosed with cancer.  She is having a benefit of some sort tomorrow.  She is a single mother of 4 who fought in Operation Iraq.  Now, she's fighting for her life.  I heard this this morning on the River radio station.

2/10/09 - Please keep Chuck Jones, Father of Jania Jones Fravel in your prayers as he battles throat cancer.   Jania has been taking him to his radiation treatments at WMC.

UPDATE as of 1/23/10 -  Good Saturday Morning to my wonderful friends and classmates,
Things have changed and I wanted to give you an update on my situation. I had bloodwork with the doctor on Thursday and my platelets had dropped to a dangerously low level (11 thousand).
It appears the time has come to begin treatments. He has put me on a regime of steroids and I had to go in for a platelet transfusion. I have also been referred to John Hopkins University and have an appointment for April 22nd.
Many people have asked what they can do or told me to let them know if I need anything- so now I have a request.
When I was set to get my platelets I was rescheduled due to a serious emergancy in the hospital (WMC). It appears that there is a criticl shortage of blood components in the blood bank. There is a Red Cross Blood Drive Feb 2nd from 12-6 in Woodstock at the American Legion. If you are healthy and can find time to donate it would be a real benefit to me and others who have to have routine treatments with blood products, not to mention victims of serious accidents and who need critical care. It doesn't hurt (much) and doesn't take too long. You could potentially save three lives with one pint of blood. So if you have time please help. Thanks so much and enjoy the NFL playoffs this Sunday. : ) Hugs and Love
Kim

11/30/09 - I don't know if anyone read Kim Collett's recent profile update, but under her Words of Wisdom she mentions that she is in the early stages of MDS.  In Kim's words...MDS is serious in that there is no cure. It impacts formation of blood cells in the marrow and can result in anemia which causes fatigue, low platelets which causes bruising and can result in internal bleeding if the number goes too low and the low white count compromises your immune system and can cause repeated infections. It also progresses to lukemia in about 30% of the cases. The flip side is that a person can have it for many years and only need supportive care (antibiotics etc.)

In my case it has not yet progressed to where they can determine which stage/type I have. Right now I am scheduled to go every 2 months for bloodwork so that the doctor can monitor the progression.

I am optimistic. I believe that a positive attitude and being proactive with your health can go a long way in helping the body heal. The bottom line is that it is all in God's hands. Thanks for the thoughts and concern.

Please keep Kim in your prayers that the doctors are able to keep ahead of this disease.
